Congratulations are in order for Willie, who recently celebrated five years of employment with Can-Am Custom Trucks. Willie came to Goodwill in 2005, when he was struggling to find a job after spending 13 years in prison. Living in a halfway house, he was referred to our South Boulevard JobLink Career Center, where he took a basic computer and resume writing class.
Then, working with a career counselor, Willie learned how to address the blemish on his record during interviews and on job applications. The result was a successful interview with Can-Am, and he started as a fabricator/installer.
For a while, Willie would get up at 4 a.m. and change buses three times to get to work on time. “Willie is a great employee,” says John Dever, operations manager. “He made a mistake a paid his debt. He just needed somebody to give him a chance.”
Willie’s hard work and determination has really paid off—he was able to buy a car, and he was recognized in 2007 with a Good Work Award for his accomplishments at our annual Cornerstone Celebration. (He’s giving his acceptance speech in the picture!)
