Fall Fashion: Velvet

September 20, 2010

Erin L. HubbsThis season, velvet isn’t just for Elvis. It’s for everyone. In every way.

For some of us, just the mention of velvet bring back wince-inducing memories of matronly formal dresses worn to stuffy high school Junior Assembly dances.

Oh wait — that just happens to me? Moving on…

A slew of designers have put a thoroughly modern spin on velvet: Zac Posen, Ralph Lauren, Thakoon, Joseph Altuzarra and Alexander Wang are just a few who incorporated the heavy, luxe fabric into their fall 2010 lines.

Gone are the pairings with taffeta bows and puffy sleeves. Instead, velvet is sexy, colorful (jewel tones are strong, especially red and blue) and adding texture in the most unexpected places. Check out Jessica Alba’s blue velvet Opening Ceremony heels.

A quick peek at Goodwill recently turned up quite a few velvet opportunities, including a long, Ralph Lauren black stretch velvet dress. So chic!

Can’t commit to a full-on velvet moment? Go with an accessory. This vintage velvet handbag ($2.99) will instantly turn any outfit into an on-trend fall look without breaking the bank.
