Trend alert: Hippy-chic embroidery
It’s not your granny’s embroidery, that’s for sure (I can’t be the only one that can’t stop humming the Beastie Boys’ “Boomin Granny” after I use the G-word).
Needlework, especially of the floral variety is having a moment right now. Hipsters such as Kirsten Dunst, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jen Brill are just a few of the fashion trend setters taking a cue from Stevie Nicks while putting a modern spin on embroidery.
Goodwill is a fantastic resource for trends that feature vaguely retro fashion such as embroidered jackets, capes and skirts. Rather than spend a zillion dollars, go digging for vintage pieces at your favorite store to add texture to your wardrobe.
But use caution — embroidery can go from boho chic to Memaw nightmare with just a few styling missteps. In most cases, especially those pictured on whowhatwear.com, embroidery works best when paired with a dark, solid color to add a bit of edge and toughen up the look.
Keep the accessories spare, too, when wearing needlework. The embroidery is an attention grabber: give it some room to work it’s sophisticated hippy vibe.
