Chalkboard paint: Beyond the classroom

August 19, 2011

My newest obsession is chalkboard paint.  At one time, I dreamed of using the paint in every room in my house.  Somewhere down the line, I regained my sanity and toned my plans down a little.

I just finished painting a wide horizontal stripe across all four walls in my son’s bedroom.  Whether its drawings or homework to-do lists, it has added functionality along with a coolness factor.  The next obvious place for chalkboard paint is the kitchen.  Shopping lists, dinner plans, family schedules…the list goes on.  However, for this room, I really was looking for something less predictable than just painting an area on the wall.

So, I hit the internet looking for inspiration.  With a new vision, I hit Goodwill for an item that I see every time I go in.  I always pass by them, never thinking of what I could do with them, but not today.  Silver platters.  I found two, one round and one more oval in shape with handles.

Best part, check out the price…$0.99 each!
So I broke out the can of chalkboard paint leftover from my son’s room project, a paint brush and the trays.
It took about three coats to cover and they came out like this.
Caution, wet paint.
You can use these in the kitchen in the place of a list on the refrigerator or or home office in place of a pin board.  Try them during dinner parties to list what is being served.

Or on your front door with a different message based on the time of year (or your mood for the day)…that could get interesting!!

Now that I’ve painted my son’s room and the trays, I’m thinking the other walls in my house need to watch their backs…
Thank you, Kim! We are wondering – who else has incorporated chalkboard paint into their home decor? For more ideas on back-to-school savings at Goodwill, check out our back-to-school fashion show, airing Monday August 22 on FOX News Rising!

What a great idea! These are rather abundant! Imagine a whole bunch of them at a party. A little girls party that is.

    Great job!

So true, Rashon. Table markers at a wedding…at a baby or bridal shower. Dinner parties…and you are right, every time I go to Goodwill, I see at least 5 of different shapes and sizes.

    Thank you, my thrifty friend!!

Quick question: Has it peeled at all? I am painting some tin cans to use in my classroom. In the 1st coat, I scuffed it a bit and the paint peeled. I’m hoping it was a 1st coat thing. I sanded them down before I painted.
