Announcing Make Good: a DIY Workshop with Verabelle!

September 14, 2011

Amanda

To me, nothing says “fall” more than a cardigan. They’re great to grab as you run out the door, or to throw on last minute in case there is a chill in the air. When a coat is too much, a cardigan will do.

The racks at Goodwill are full of this fall staple. But if you want something a little more special than just that simple button-up, a little Do-It-Yourself (DIY) is in order, or in this case… a little SIY!

On September 24, I will be on-hand at theConcord Goodwill store to teach you a little Sew-It-Yourself project so that you can customize your very own thrifted cardigan.

We’ll be adding ruffles and fabric-covered buttons to ordinary cardigans, and drawing inspiration from my line of redesigned vintage clothing. I’ll even show you how you can apply the same techniques to other items from your wardrobe. I’ll be teaching techniques for both the beginning sewer and for those who are more experienced.

You can either scour the shelves at Goodwill for materials to create your very own ruffles and fabric-covered buttons, or you can use one of my readymade Sew-It-Yourself ruffle and button kits for a quick and easy update.

I've used two of the same ruffles to create this look. You can also think about mixing complimentary fabrics on either side.

We’ll have a quick lesson and then the fun begins – you’ll get to rummage through racks of clothing to find something that sparks your creativity.

I’ll be by your side the whole time for questions and suggestions as you look.

Your cardigan creation will be perfect for a back-to-school look, to throw on at the office, or for a autumn bonfire with friends. And don’t forget, the holidays are coming up; something handmade always makes for a great gift!

Hope to see you there! Don’t miss the details…

Who: Anyone who wants to learn! Beginners to advanced sewers welcome.

Sonia's Precious Petticoat: A ruffle makes any item of clothing more playful and feminine! I made this ruffle from a scrap taken from a vintage blouse, and then I finished the look with some embroidery along the edge.

When: Saturday, September 24 at 10 a.m.

Where: Concord Goodwill store, 5511 Poplar Tent Road in Concord

What to bring:

Nothing! You can participate by just watching the demonstrations, or you can shop for a cardigan on site! We will have “sew-it-yourself” kits (including buttons, ruffles and instructions) available for purchase as well, so you can get started embellishing your cardigan right away.

RSVP:

To sign up, visit your local Goodwill store or send an email with your name to community@goodwillsp.org. We look forward to seeing you there!
