Why Donating to Goodwill is a Good Thing

July 19, 2012

Wake up call #1:  We all have a little too much “stuff” lingering in our lives.

Wake up call #2:  Just because you paid $100 for that lamp doesn’t mean you should keep it … Especially since you don’t even like it.

Wake up call #3:  Recouping your “investment” in anything is highly unlikely unless it is uber-name brand!

Wake up call #4:  It is much easier to donate than sell.

A home office before decluttering…

…and after decluttering!

Okay, that is enough wake up calls for a couple of weeks!  If we are honest with ourselves, then I’m sure one or more of these wake-up calls rings true for you.  I often hear clients say:

“I have too much stuff and I want to downsize.”

{Oh no, not the but}

“I paid good money for this stuff, and it is in good condition.  I don’t want to ‘just’ donate it.”

{Just donate it?}

So why is donating your items to Goodwill a good thing?

For one, it is much easier than keeping all that stuff or trying to sell it!  There may be a misconception about what Goodwill is all about.  Yes, they are a store that sells secondhand items.  Yes, they are a non-profit organization.  Yes, they take donations.

But they are so much more.  They are on a mission to help … and let me quote … “All people in our region have the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential through the power of work.”

$0.90 of every $1.00 spent at Goodwill stores is funneled into programs like job training, job connections, and youth services.

Your donations help Goodwill earn more money through their stores and sales.  You are recycling for a good cause! Helping others feels so much better than living in a house full of stuff that you no longer use, need, or like.
