Building a Legacy: Tyisha Hawkins
Tyisha loves working with her hands. “I’m not a sit-down person,” says the 27-year-old. That’s probably why she has enjoyed every job she has ever had – from banquet set-up to working on a production line. For Tyisha, it’s about the people she encounters on a daily basis.
“I love trying out new things, but what I really need now is something that is consistent,” she said. Tyisha is currently enrolled with Goodwill’s five-week Construction Training program, which assists individuals in quickly developing the basic knowledge and skills necessary to obtain an entry level position or better in the construction industry.
As part of the training program, Tyisha and her classmates will receive hands-on experience in green building practices alongside volunteers from Habitat and Bank of America as together they build the Legacy House, a unique building effort that will transform one corner of an uptown parking lot into an active construction site beginning with CarolinaFest, the DNC week kickoff event presented by the Charlotte in 2012 Convention Host Committee.
Tyisha is proud to be part of the class, and she says it’s the first thing in a long time that she has really felt committed to. “I don’t want to settle for less – I want to give it my all,” she said.
In addition to lending our students for the Legacy House effort, Goodwill will help educate the community about sustainability efforts as part of the Legacy Village during the DNC. Even our mascot, Smiling G, is on board!
Labor Day is the perfect time to remind people that we are all part of the solution – whether it’s about sustainability, job creation or strengthening families in our community. For more information about the Legacy House build, click here or join the conversation online.
